Living a Vegan Lifestyle

The Life I choose to live.

Here are some of the answers to the many questions I have been asked since I started The Healthy Bitch and began living a Vegan lifestyle.

The heart is arguably the hardest working muscle in the body, pumping blood, oxygen, and nutrients to all the body’s organs. Eating animal-based foods impairs the heart’s ability to do its job. Meat and dairy products are high in cholesterol and saturated fat. As these fatty substances, or “plaques,” build up inside the walls of arteries and blood flow to all areas of the body is impeded. This artery damage is called atherosclerosis. It often begins very early in life and develops gradually. When too little blood reaches various regions of the body, normal immune systems are impaired, setting people up for a number of diseases, most notably heart disease. Heart disease is the number one health problem in the United States today and, according to the American Heart Association, the single leading cause of death. Most heart disease is diet-related and caused by animal products. Research shows a highly significant correlation between the consumption of even small amounts of animal-based foods and the increasing prevalence of heart disease.

Cholesterol comes from animals! Our liver naturally produces the cholesterol in which we need. Did you know that 3 ounces of beef has just as much cholesterol as 3 ounces of chicken, that’s approximately 86 mg of cholesterol. What about a nice glass of 2% milk? Well guess what, eight ounces of milk contains 20 mg of cholesterol and one egg has 215 mg of cholesterol.

Now ask yourself this, how much cholesterol should one have?
According to the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) the recommended daily consumption of cholesterol should not exceed 200 mg a day. According to MRC (Maria Rose Comitto) and BDC (Brian Daniel Comitto) the recommended daily consumption of cholesterol is zero.

Ok, even if you wanted to argue that the NCEP has thoroughly researched the appropriate intake of cholesterol with the consumers health in mind, and you buy into the myth of “good cholesterol” and “bad cholesterol”, now ask yourself: What’s in the meat I am eating? Whether it’s “millions served everyday” or “what would you like this evening sir” it’s all the same shit, literally. Along with shit in your meat you’ll find antibiotics and growth hormones, so no wonder little jenny has boobs by the age of eight.

I don’ know about you but that’s enough of a reason for me to stay clear of the delightful array of animal products, but incase you need more here are some statistics.

Research shows that vegetarians are 50 percent less likely to develop heart disease, and they have 40 percent of the cancer rate of meat-eaters. Plus, meat-eaters are nine times more likely to be obese than vegans are.

Ask yourself, when does change usually take place?

We all end up with the same answer, when something happens in our life that we cannot reverse.

Nobody wants to admit that their will to want to make a positive change in their life is more often than not controlled by fear. Fear of failure, fear of disappointment and fear of the unknown, lurks over each and every one of us when it comes to change. We are conditioned to except the routine that we have created for ourselves. Little do we know that our daily activities have been influenced not by a true conscious choice but as a result of our surroundings? We are a product of the society in which we live. Once you come to this simplistic realization that you have the ability and opportunity to be accountable for your choices, by simply finding truth in your actions, this is when change will occur. This is the moment when you will be able to make a conscious choice, one in which you can be proud of.

The truth can be ugly and many will not want to bear the cross of knowing, but I can promise you this that with truth comes strength that will allow you to live a life full of purpose.
Everyone has what we call “vices”, to be truthful there are too many to list, if you look inside yourself you will find what it is that holds you back from the person in which you know your capable of being.

I cannot reverse the loss of loved ones, and I cannot go back in time where change should of happened, but I can make a change now by knowing the truth behind the choices I make. I will no longer be subject to change based on need or change based on tragedy, and I no longer will be blind to the choices I make.

New Year Jump Start Diet Plan

What is a Diet?

A DIET is the sum of the food consumed by an organism or group. Our diet is simply what we eat.

Your Body is Your Temple – Be Good to It!

We are all on a diet plan whether it is a conscious choice or an unconscious choice; we all make a choice about what it is we are eating. So for 2010 I have decided to make a conscious choice about my diet. My food choices are based solely on the nutritional value of the food I choose to eat. This will be my called The Healthy Bitch Total Body Rejuvenation Plan. I will not weigh myself for 28 days during my total body rejuvenation plan. Not weighing myself will eliminate the stress of what is often referred to is as “dieting”. This plan is not about loosing weight; it is about healing my body and eliminating harmful toxins from my temple.

Exercising is a Must!

Exercise is any bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall healthy. Exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet. I have said it before and I will say it again: Move your body everyday. Find a way to incorporate moving into your schedule. Don’t get stuck behind the desk all day. Get up and move.

What Is In Your Skin Care Products?

Read The Label – It’s Your Right to Know!

question-markBefore you dismiss this, go to your bathroom and check some labels. You’ll find Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Propylene Glycol (not to mention dozens of other chemicals) in tooth pastes, conditioners, cosmetics, shampoos, lotions and many other common products, you and your loved ones use several times every day.
Could these ingredients possibly have any long term side effects?

  • WHY is the rate of cancer soaring?
  • WHY is the rate of heart disease soaring?
  • WHERE did Alzheimer’s disease come from?
  • WHY do so many people need glasses or contacts?
  • WHY does the USA lead the world in the proliferation of degenerative disease?
  • WHAT does the USA spend a TRILLION dollars annually on health care for anyway?
  • Shouldn’t overall health be getting better?

There is something going on…and it’s not pretty. When you know the facts about what these chemicals found in our everyday products are and where they come from and what what they cause. …you’ll be shocked… and then You should get angry.

The tobacco industry faces monumental scandal. And it’s NOT only about what they knew regarding tobacco use…but, WHEN did they know it?

Whether it’s 10 years from now or 20 or 30 – if producers of personal care items get called on the carpet to account for the use of these chemicals, will we be asking the same questions – WHEN did they know it?

The simple truth is… We already know it! These chemicals are found in industrial compounds and their Material Safety Data Sheets warn of cancer causing side effects, extreme skin irritants, etc. There’s even a medial study that shows exposure can retard eye development in young mammals.

Could this possibly include our children? Hmmm… WAKE UP AMERICA!!

The American Cancer Society says that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer in their lifetime.
    It is an unbelievable epidemic.

Find out what’s in your bathroom.
Read the labels. You may find a shock!

Remember, every day counts. Living a few extra years, months, weeks, or even days could make a huge difference. For you, or a loved one. This additional time could allow you to see your child, grandchild, or even great grandchild walk down the isle, graduate, marry, or simply do something that you have waited so long to see. Eliminating or simply drastically reducing all or many of these ingredients, proven to be used, every single day, of the majority of a person’s life, can make a huge impact on the quality of living, as well as the people you love and care for. It just does not make sense to continue to use these harmful and potentially cancer causing ingredients, now more than ever, after being presented with this information in the palm of your hands, for your eyes to see, and your ears to hear. The question now becomes, would you knowingly use, or eat something that has a potentially deadly, or life altering effect? Would you give these things to your kids? Your wife or husband? Would you go ahead and microwave their food, knowing all you now know? Is the financial difference really worth it? What really is a few extra bucks at the end of the week, especially if you really can afford it? And for those who can not, take baby steps. Integrate one item at a time where you wont see the financial crisis. Everyday, we are presented with newly learned information. We have the ability and the control to make that change, and the right choice. Because there is an alternative. They are waiting for you, on the shelf, in the stores, just like the bad ones. It is no harder to purchase these items than the others. Make the change. The results may be worth a life.

You have been presented with this important information.
You would be foolish to turn the blind eye.

How Much Do You Spend on Cosmetics?

Save your money and save your face don’t be fooled by the pretty packaging.

If you would use nothing but soap and water on your skin, and put your money in the bank rather than buy cosmetics, you not only would be more youthful looking, you’d be wealthier.

Unfortunately, consumers are at the mercy of cosmetic companies. Ingredients may be listed on the package, but who knows what they do? Even ‘natural’ and hypoallergenic’ are misused terms and means for marketing and advertising.

Just because a product is “natural” doesn’t mean it’s good!

If you put your faith in cosmetics and skin care and the companies and their products, you’re getting what you’re paying for, the slick advertising and packaging.

Generally, the cap on the bottle of most skin care products costs more than the ingredients that are in the product.

Research has shown that an $87 bottle of firming cream contains less than 25 cents worth of ingredients.
So what did you pay for? You paid for that full-page ad, that beautiful box and the beautiful bottle. Cosmetic companies take advantage of consumers who strive to look good, to take care of themselves. Ironically, they’re making their skin age faster and they’re paying to do it.

Would you wash your child’s (or your own) hair and brush those little teeth with brake fluid, engine degreaser or anti-freeze? You probably are and don’t know it!
This is no JOKE, NOT A HYPE! ITS FOR REAL!

1965 to 1982 over 4 million distinct chemical compounds formulated.

  • Approximately 3,000 chemicals are added to our foods.
  • 700 chemicals have been found in our drinking water.
  • 400 have been identified in human tissue.
  • Over 500 can be found under kitchen sinks of American homes.
  • Over 800 neurotoxic chemical compounds are used in cosmetics and perfumes.
  • Recently, as reported in the Boston Globe Sen. Ted Kennedy stated that Congress has identified more than 125 ingredients available in cosmetics that are suspected of causing cancer, others birth defects OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Association has stated that there are at least 884 ingredients in personal care products that could cause cancer.

Healthy Skin Care – Ingredients to Avoid

Every Healthy Bitch Needs to Have Healthy Skin!

The following is a list of potentially harmful ingredients to avoid in skin care and cosmetic products.

Propylene Glycol is a colorless, nearly odorless, clear, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste.
Is a component of industrial anti-freeze and the major ingredient in brake and hydraulic fluid. Tests show it can be a strong skin irritant. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) warn to avoid skin contact and can cause a significant number of reactions including; eye irritation, gastro-intestinal disturbances, nausea, headache, vomiting, central nervous system depression, respiratory tract irritation, kidney damage, and liver abnormality.

SLS is perhaps the most harmful ingredient in personal-care products. SLS is used in testing-labs as the standard skin irritant to compare the healing properties of other ingredients. Industrial uses of SLS include: garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers and car wash soaps. Studies show its danger potential to be great, when used in personal-care products. Research has shown that SLS and SLES may cause potentially carcinogenic nitrates and dioxins to form in the bottles of shampoos and cleansers by reacting with commonly used ingredients found in many products. Large amounts of nitrates may enter the blood system from just one shampooing.

Sodium Fluoride (MSDS) – used as Rat poison, do you want it in your toothpaste?

    Cocoamide DEA, TEA, MEA, (MSDS)
Warning: Causes sever irritation, harmful if swallowed or inhaled, avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing

    GLYCERIN (synthetic)(MSDS)
Draws moisture from inside the skin, and holds it on the surface for a better “feel”.
Dries skin from the inside out. Listed on MSDS as hazardous.

Titanium Dioxide (MSDS) -now FINALLY declared a carcinogen, 2001
Potential Health Effects: Inhalation: May cause mild irritation to the respiratory tract. Skin Contact: May cause mild irritation and redness. Eye Contact: May cause mild irritation, possible reddening. Chronic Exposure: Long-term exposure to titanium dioxide dust may result in mild fibrosis (scarring of the lungs). Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions: Persons with pre-existing lung disease may be more susceptible to the effects of this substance. ASTHMATIC PATIENTS BEWARE!

Derived from animal skins and ground-up chicken feet. Both of these ingredients form films that may suffocate and over-moisturize the skin. BAR SOAPS Made from animal fat and lye. These substances may allow bacteria feed and grow in it and may corrode and dry the skin.

Most moisturizers contain humectants that act as water attractors, they actually pull moisture out of your skin. Here’s How: Humectants are on the search for moisture that can be absorbed from the environment. If the environment is so drying that there is no moisture to be had, they will get it from the next best source – your skin. When this happens, the ingredient, which is supposed to help your skin retain moisture, instead does the opposite.

Hypoallergenic means “less than” and the word hypoallergenic tells the consumer that the manufacturer believes the product has fewer allergens than other products. There are no federal regulations defining allergens, nor are there any guidelines. So “hypoallergenic” has little meaning.

These products were temporary wrinkle removers. The formulas contained a bovine serum albumin that, when dried, formed a film over wrinkles thus making wrinkles less obvious. Bentonite is used in formulations and masks. It forms films which are gas impermeable, effectively trapping toxins in the skin, suffocating the skin by shutting out the vitally needed oxygen.

Quite drying and may be dehydrating to the skin. It also may be contaminated with impurities. Forms films which is gas impermeable. Effectively traps toxins and CO (Carbon Monoxide), in the skin which need to vent and escape. Then suffocates the skin by shutting out the vitally needed oxygen.

Bentonite or kaolin, an ingredient used in many makeup foundations, is the same stuff used to fight fires.
The very foundation you put on … is suffocating your face. The skin is a living, breathing organ that should be enhanced rather than inhibited.

    BIOTIN (Vitamin H)
A deficiency of this vitamin has been associated with greasy scalps and baldness in rats and other experimental animals. Fur-bearing animals, however, have a very different hair growth from human beings. Biotin deficiency in man is extremely rare. Biotin is considered a worthless additive in cosmetic products. The molecular size of Biotin is too large to penetrate the skin.

DEA, TEA: Used in products such as mascara, foundation and body wash as an emulsifier and/or foaming agent. Environmental Working Group (EWG) has found them to be a skin sensitizer and that they can form carcinogenic nitrosamine compounds in the skin or body after absorption if mixed with nitrosating agents. Studies have classified DEA, TEA as a respiratory toxin, neurotoxicity hazard, and immunotoxicity hazard. Listed on labels as: DEA, Diethanolamine, TEA, Triethanolamine.

LANOLIN: Advertisers have found that the words “contains Lanolin” help to sell a product and have promoted it as being able to “penetrate the skin better than other oils,” although there is little scientific proof of this. Lanolin has been found to be a common skin sensitizer causing allergic contact skin rashes. Lanolin usually contains pesticides and dioxins, known carcinogens, used on sheep and wool.

Dibutyl Phthalate: Most often used in nail polish. Has been deemed a possible reproductive or developmental toxin, potential endocrine disruptor, skin sensitizer, immune system toxin, gastrointestinal or liver toxicant, kidney toxicant, and neurotoxin by EWG. The European Union has found it to be dangerous for the environment, very toxic to aquatic organisms and has banned it from use in cosmetics. The EPA Water Quality Standards Database states it is a priority water pollutant under the Clean Water Act and a hazardous air pollutant under the Clean Air Act. Listed on labels as: Dibutyl Phthalate.

Formaldehyde: Used in nail treatment, EWG lists it as a known human carcinogen, skin and lung sensitizer, gastrointestinal and liver toxicant and neurotoxin. Listed on labels as: Formaldehyde, Formalin.

Parabens: Widely used as a preservative to inhibit microbial growth in many products ranging from hand soap to toothpaste and also many foods. Has been assessed as hormonally active by the Cosmetics Ingredient Review. Appears to mimic estrogen in our bodies and has been found in breast tissue. EWG found parabens to be a possible endocrine disruptor, which could lead to impaired fertility or fetal development. Also found to be a skin sensitizer and skin or sense organ toxicant. Listed on labels as: alkyl parahydroxybenzoate, butylparaben, methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparabens.

Petrolatum: Otherwise known as petroleum jelly, it is a mineral oil derivative used as an emollient or lubricant in products such as lip balm and eye makeup. EWG found it to be potentially contaminated with impurities linked to cancer or other significant health problems. The European Union has banned petrolatum from use in cosmetics. Listed on labels as: Petrolatum, petroleum jelly.

Talc: Used in products such as body powder, eye shadow and diaper cream, EWG found it to be potentially contaminated with harmful impurities linked to cancer or other significant health problems and a respiratory toxicant. Listed on labels as: Talc, Talcum

Skin Care Products Linked to Cancer

Over the last 100 years, the rate of cancer in the U.S. has sky rocketed from 1 out of 800 people diagnosed, to 1 out of 3 today.

Are you wondering WHY? The Healthy Bitch has some of the answers.

Making healthy choices about skin care and cosmetic products is equally as important as the choices we make about the food we eat. Our skin acts as a sponge, absorbing whatever is applied, which then enters our bloodstream and is absorbed by certain organs. It is important to read and understand the labels of the products you use.

    Healthy Skin Care

    Healthy Skin Care

Think of beauty products like food.

What you put on your skin eventually ends up in your body.

Certified organic products are made with ingredients that are grown free of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified organisms. They also don’t include harmful additives such as petroleum waxes, fillers and artificial chemicals. Certified organic beauty products work better simply because they are made with superior ingredients.

Organic farming eliminates the use of synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, all of which have a destructive effect on our water, soil and health. Organic plants are also grown without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as they may pose a significant threat to both human and environmental health. Therefore, through looking out for your own health, you’re also helping to protect our fragile ecosystem. That is what they call a “win-win” situation.

    The Term “Natural”
There is no legal definition for “natural” which is why you see it everywhere. In cosmetic terminology, the term “natural” usually means anything the manufacturer wishes. There are no legal boundaries for the term. There are no guidelines surrounding what can or cannot be inside a “natural” product. Most cosmetics called “natural” still contain preservatives, coloring agents and all the other things you can think of that sound very unnatural.

    cancer causing carcinogen

    cancer causing carcinogen

    What is a carcinogen?
A carcinogen is any substance or radiation directly involved in the evolution of cancer. Studies have shown that this may be due to the disruption of cellular metabolic processes and damage to the structure of an organism. Several radioactive substances are considered carcinogens. A common example of a carcinogen is tobacco smoke.

Tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemical compounds, many of which are carcinogenic or otherwise toxic. After the carcinogen enters the body, the body makes an attempt to eliminate it through a process called biotransformation. The purpose of these reactions is to make the carcinogen more water-soluble so that it can be removed from the body. But these reactions can also convert a less toxic carcinogen into a more toxic one.

    What is Cancer?
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth beyond the normal limits, invade and destroy adjacent tissues, and sometimes spread to other locations in the body.

Carcinogens may increase the risk of getting cancer by altering cellular structure or damaging DNA directly in cells. Usually DNA damage, if too severe to repair, leads to programmed cell death, but if the programmed cell death pathway is damaged, then the cell cannot prevent itself from becoming a cancer cell.

    What’s In Your Toothpaste?

    Swish Don’t Swallow

Location is Everything: Mucus Membranes in the Mouth

Even if you don’t swallow any toothpaste, you’re at risk from toxic chemicals. The mucus membranes inside the mouth are one of the most direct routes to the blood, the brain and other cells of your body, since the mucosal lining inside the mouth has about 90% absorption efficiency.

Both conventional and alternative medicines are often applied to the mucus membranes of the cheek or under the tongue for just that reason; it’s one of the fastest and most effective way to get chemicals into the body.

    Hidden or Inactive Toothpaste Ingredients

Inactive ingredients include chemicals that give toothpaste its color, flavor and texture. Toothpaste manufacturers may not disclose these ingredients on packaging since they aren’t intended for ingestion.

    Artificial Sweeteners – Minty Fresh
Every mainstream toothpaste contains artificial flavors and sweeteners to add the right minty fresh taste. These chemicals can provoke allergic reactions, asthma attacks, headaches, and can cause irritation to the gums and oral tissue.

Food Dye – What’s a Zebra without its Stripes
Food dyes, like those used to give toothpaste its red, blue or green stripes, are usually made from petroleum products and coal tar. They have been linked to behavior changes, learning problems, allergic reactions, headaches, asthma attacks and cancer.

Triclosan Kills Bacteria – Germs be gone!
Triclosan is used in toothpaste for its antibacterial properties. It’s also used in pesticides, and is classified as a dangerous chemical by the EPA and may cause damage to the liver, kidneys, heart and lungs, sterility, convulsions, coma and death. It is a hormone disruptor and is stored in fat, accumulating in the body’s tissues with each use.

Worse, in combination with the chlorine used to sterilize normal tap water, triclosan forms chloroform – the carcinogenic gas used as an anesthetic but that can also kill in concentrations just over those needed to sedate.

Isopropyl Alcohol and Ethanol – Freshen Up
Isopropyl alcohol and ethanol (ethyl alcohol) are drying agents, used to speed the entry of other toothpaste ingredients into the soft tissues of the mouth and gums.

Ethanol is the primary ingredient in mouthwash and is a known carcinogen. It has also been clinically shown to destroy fillings.

Ingesting as little as one ounce of isopropyl alcohol is deadly. In smaller doses, it causes headaches, dizziness, narcosis, nausea, vomiting and coma.

Titanium Dioxide – Bright White Paste
Typically used to color your toothpaste a brilliant white, titanium dioxide is also used provide opacity. It can also be found in sunscreens, paint, plastics and pills.

Don’t be fooled by the pretty packaging!

Obviously not all toothpaste manufacturers use the exact same ingredients, but these are the main ingredients used in most toothpastes and a surprising number of other personal hygiene products. So whether you are using Colgate, Crest, Aquafresh, Rembrandt or whatever your favorite toothpaste happens to be, so don’t be a dumb bitch be a healthy bitch and take a look at the inactive ingredients and if they are not listed be sure to call the number and check out exactly you’re putting in your mouth – the results may surprise you.
